Folding lantern: opening and storing

Folding lantern: opening and storing

Which type is this for?

This guide applies to a folding lantern with bamboo ribs, an internal steel frame and a round wooden top ring with two opposite slots. Check that your lantern has this fastening. This guide does not apply to Roestie lanterns or a different fastening.

Check these first

Is the bamboo free?

Check whether any bamboo has been pushed inwards or is caught.

Large lantern?

Fold the bamboo outwards before opening the lantern.

Secure both sides

When the steel support enters the wooden ring, gently press each side fully into place.

Do not force it

Is the support becoming crooked, or is the lantern not opening? Stop pressing and check the bamboo first.

Press gently. Do not force it. Check each side separately before continuing.

Before you start

For large lanterns, fold all the bamboo outwards before opening the lantern.

Do not pull the steel rod upwards to fit it into the slots. Uneven tension can distort the frame. Your fingers can become trapped when folding the lantern.

Opening

  1. Stand the lantern upright on a flat surface. Locate the two slots in the wooden top ring and the steel rod in the centre.
  2. Press evenly on the wooden ring with both index fingers and thumbs. If the steel rod has moved to one side and is preventing you from pressing down, move it to the centre before continuing.
  3. Do not use force. If the metal support becomes crooked or you feel that the lantern is not opening, stop pressing and first check whether the bamboo has been pushed inwards or is caught.
  4. As the wooden ring slides down the steel frame and reaches the bent section, the ring tilts towards you. The bent steel enters the nearest slot. Gently press this side fully into the slot so that it is secure. With only one slot engaged, the lantern is still unstable.
  5. Turn the lantern 180 degrees so that the unsecured side of the steel frame faces you. Place both thumbs on either side of the remaining slot and press down so that the second side enters its slot. Gently press this side fully into the slot too, so that it is secure. Check both sides separately.

Folding down

  1. Hold the wooden top ring. Place your thumb near one slot and your index finger on the opposite side, near the other slot. Watch your fingers: they can become trapped when folding the lantern.
  2. Bring your index finger to the upper part of the steel rod. Squeeze the rod inwards, towards the centre of the wooden ring. Once the bent edge clears the wooden slot, the rod slides down.
  3. Turn the lantern 180 degrees and repeat step 2 at the other slot. The lantern folds down. Carefully straighten any bent bamboo and put the lantern in a bag for storage.

Storing and transporting

Store and transport the folded lantern in a bag. Keep it in a cool, dry place and avoid knocks and jolts.

Avoid moisture and direct sunlight. Strong sunlight and high temperatures can fade the fabric colour. This guide does not confirm suitability for outdoor use or bad weather.

Hanging and lighting

This guide covers opening, folding and storage. The fastening and lighting need to suit your specific lantern. Include the item reference and a photograph of the connection when asking about it.
